Pension survey 2011

Retirement and confidence in the future in Luxembourg

From September 29 to October 21, 2011, the third annual survey focused on the topic of “Retirement and confidence in the future in Luxembourg”. Over 1600 people have shared with us their thoughts, concerns and expectations in regards to this topic. The results are clear: young and old, men and women, are all concerned. We saw in the responses a lack of confidence in the public pension system, a lack of knowledge of both the first pillar and the second pillar system. The respondents also revealed uncertainty about how well they and their family were protected.

The survey also confirmed what we and many other companies have already known: the employer has a very important role to play, especially in better informing and protecting the employees.

Here are some of the most striking survey results when it comes to retirement and public pensions:

  • Only 1 young person in 10 (under age 30) is not concerned about retirement
  • Over 40% of young workers are apprehensive about how much money they will have on retirement – and are saving for a more secure future
  • Only 1 in 10 people think that they can rely on the public pension system after retirement

The survey results underline the importance not only of providing employee benefits for employees, but also the need to communicate about these, and educate employees on their coverages and options.
