The Italian insurance company La Fondiaria purchased somewhat over 10% of Swiss Life/Rentenantalt's share capital. According to them, the purchase is purely a matter of financial participation. The possible collaboration of both companies in selected European markets is currently being examined.

With a premium volume in 1999 of about 5 billion Swiss francs, La Fondiaria (Florence) is one of the largest Italian insurance groups. The company mainly focuses its activities on the non-life sector, accounting for about 75% of their premium revenue, and is ranked number 3 in the Italian property insurance business.
