Unum recently announced valuable enhancements to its group income protection (GIP) products, including a new associated business cost cover option. In addition, employers with a Premier group income protection scheme now have a new way to manage sickness absence: Premier Online.
New associated business cost cover
As of June 2010, employers can benefit from the inclusion of an associated business cost cover option within Unum GIP products. This means that costs associated with employee absence due to illness or injury can be covered under one policy, including employer pension and National Insurance contributions, holiday pay cover, and premiums for other benefits such as group life cover, private medical insurance, or even the costs of a company car or mobile phone.

Wojciech Dochan, Head of Commercial Marketing at Unum, said: “Employers will benefit from a simpler approach, getting coverage for their costs associated with an employee being absent for a long period due to illness or injury in one benefit.”

Additional enhancements
Further improvements to Unum’s GIP policies took effect on April 12, 2010, and include:
- Removing time limits for the duration of secondments: employers no longer need to notify Unum about employee secondments
- New automatic cover for three years for members temporarily absent for reasons other than ill health, provided members are declared in the membership data and premiums are paid
- Unum limited term policies will now allow multiple claims if the employee successfully returns to work between claims
- New conditions also apply to linked claims and switching situations

Premier Online – a new resource for managing sickness absence
Unum has also launched a new website to help employers with a Premier group income protection scheme manage sickness absence: Premier Online. The new site offers several useful sickness absence tools, including an interactive week-by-week guide to sickness absence, and access to all the claims and rehabilitation forms needed to make a Premier referral or standard claim at the click of a button.
