Fort Dearborn Life Insurance Company is named after a famous military fort built in 1803 in Chicago. The company was founded on the same site that this fort once occupied. The site, which is located at the mouth of the Chicago River, is marked by a plaque in the sidewalk that pays respect to Fort Dearborn as the major western stronghold of the United States until destroyed in August 1812.
